Service Description

Acupressure stems from traditional chinese medical theory which has been used for thousands of years. It revolves around the idea of targeting special pressure points which run down meridians or channels of energy through the body. It is believed that through these invisible channels flows vital energy - or a life force called qi (chi). There are 12 major meridians connecting to specific organs or networks of organs, organizing a system of communication throughout your body. These pressure points are also targeted in Acupuncture however in Acupressure, practitioners use their fingers, palms, elbows, feet or special devices to apply pressure to acupoints opting to not use needles. The meridians begin at your fingertips, connect to your brain, and then connect to an organ associated with a certain meridian. When one of these meridians is blocked or out of balance, illness can occur. Acupressure and Acupuncture are thought to help restore health and balance by targeting the blockages in these flows of energy and help regulate opposing forces of yin (positive energy) and yang (negative energy) in the body. This can result in reduced stress, improved energy levels, relief in pain and lessen other symptoms of cancer or its treatment. Acupressure not only treats the energy fields and body but also the mind, emotions, and spirit. Some even believe that therapists can transmit the vital energy (external chi) to another person. This idea also aligns with Craniosacral therapy. Specifically Acupressure has been known to help with low back pain, postoperative pain, or headaches. Several studies support the use of wrist acupressure to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting. Some studies suggest that acupressure releases endorphins and promotes anti-inflammatory effects, helping with certain types of arthritis.
